Another gallery closing

The last piece of art that I bought at Dale Smith Gallery was a photograph by Genevieve Thauvette. It cost $1,200. I know others also bought Thauvette pieces at that exhibition, just over a year ago. The Canadian Museum of Civilization bought a half-dozen or so. A few more exhibitions like that, and Dale Smith probably wouldn’t be shutting the doors on her New Edinburgh gallery, but she is.

“There are really so many reasons,” Smith said this week of her decision to close the eight-year-old gallery on Beechwood Avenue at the end of August. “It was an emotional decision, but it was not emotionally made, if you know what I mean. It’s such a tough business.”

Indeed it is — though, it must be said, any small business is a tough row to hoe, with government red tape and bank carrying charges and parking challenges and any number of other obstacles popping up like roots in your way. Most small businesses — with the exception in Ottawa, it seems, of shawarma shops and nail salons — fail, be they galleries or restaurants or anything else.
